Guide for resellers
How to read the item list of a returns lot before you buy it
The item list is what turns a lot into a considered purchase. We explain what each column means and what to look for before you pay.
What the item list includes
| Column | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Product | The name of the item, exactly as it appears on Amazon. |
| ASIN | Its unique Amazon reference. With it you can find the product page, the photos and the reviews. |
| See on Amazon | The direct link to that product. |
| Amazon price | The reference price on Amazon. It changes over time: check it via the link. |
| Box | Which box each item is in, when the lot is a pallet of several boxes. |
And at the top, the lot details: how many items it contains, its total Amazon value and the lot price excl. VAT.
Five things to look out for
- How the value is spread. A lot with a few high-value items is not the same as one with many low-priced ones: it changes the work it will take you to sell it.
- The categories. They should fit what you sell and your customers: there are motoring, home, kids and kitchen and homeware lots, among others.
- Duplicates. Several units of the same product can be an advantage (one listing, many sales) or a risk if it does not sell.
- Bulky or heavy items. Think about the space they take up and what they cost to ship.
- The Amazon price is a reference. A returned item sells for less than it costs to buy the same product on Amazon: do your sums with that in mind.
What the item list does not tell you
The item list tells you what is in the lot, not what condition each piece is in: lots are sold as is, unchecked, just as they arrive from Amazon. That is standard in the trade and it is what keeps their price so far below Amazon's. Even so, with an item list you know much more than with a blind pallet.
